Summer School, Corfu Island 2026 – ‘The EU as a global actor: legal foundations and challenges’.

The 8th Summer School on European Union Law will be organised in Corfu Island on 27-31 July 2026.  

WHAT IS IT

The Summer School is yearly organised, since 2017, in Corfu by the European Law Masters Alumni Association of the Law School of Athens (ELMAA) , in collaboration with the Ionian University of Corfu and the Corfu Bar Association. This year, it covers the topic of ‘The EU as a global actor: legal foundations and challenges’. More than 10 professors coming from the Court of Justice of the European Union, the other EU institutions and European universities will offer their insight through a variety of courses relating to the Summer School’s topic, touching upon different fields of EU law, to aprox. 50 participants coming from all over Europe and abroad.

Courses are held in English every morning from 10:00 to 13:30 at the premises of the Ionian University.

Participants get to meet professors and colleagues from different countries during the courses, the Summer School's activities, and the daily dinners offered by the Summer School's organisation.

Accommodation
Accommodation

Accommodation is provided from Sunday 26 July to Saturday 1 August at the Sunset Hotel Corfu, located nearby the city centre (10 minutes by bus). Transportation by bus to the lectures and all social activities is also provided.

In afternoons, participants have free time to discover the beauties of Corfu island. 2 beach days, 1 folklore dance night in a Corfiot village, and 1 guide tour will be organised by the Summer School's organising team.

A tour by a professional guide at the historical sites of the city and a presentation of the European history of the island is offered to the participants.

The Summer School’s Opening Ceremony will be held at the event hall of the Corfu Bar Association.

Participants receive at the end of the Summer School a certificate of attendance signed by the academic coordinator of the Summer School, Prof. V. Christianos, and Professor of the Ionian University, Michalis Politis.

In between classes, participants take a 30 minutes coffee break to rest, discuss and enjoy a beverage and snacks.

Every day from Monday to Thursday, participants and professors eat altogether in restaurants around the city of Corfu.

Application procedure

Applications are open until all places are booked (see selection criteria below). All places for the full package of 600 Euros have been filled; you can still apply however for the reduced fee package of 150 Euros.

Participation fee: The fee is 600 Euros and covers all basic expenses during your stay in Corfu Island:

1) accommodation at the Sunset Hotel Corfu from Sunday 26 July to Saturday 1 August (6 nights) in double rooms (to be shared with another participant of the Summer School: either of your preference upon agreement with another participant, or with a randomly chosen participant of the same sex),

2) daily breakfast at the hotel,

3) daily light meals between courses,

4) daily meal at a restaurant in Corfu from Monday 27.7 to Thursday 30.7,

5) all social activities and transportation by private bus. The social activities are the following (the specific days may change):

i. opening ceremony & reception in the evening of Monday 27.7,

ii. 2 beach days in the afternoons of Tuesday 28.7 and Thursday 30.7,

iii. 1 guide tour in Corfu Town in the evening of Wednesday 29.7 and

iv.  1 folklore dance night in a village of Corfu (tbc)

5) The courses and the Summer School’s material.

*Therefore, the fee does not include your travel expenses (airplane tickets or other) to and from Corfu.

 

 

Reduced rates: A rate of 500 Euros applies to applicants who are members of ELMAA association or have already or will participate in the Capri School of European Procedural Law (see below). 

You can also apply for a fee of 150 Euros if you are only interested in participating in the Summer School without accommodation, nutrition and transportation to social activities (you will receive the Summer School’s material and enjoy our light meals between the courses). The said fee is 100 Euros for participants representing one of the the three co-organisers of the Summer School, namely members of ELMAA, students at the Ionian University and lawyers of the Corfu Bar Association.

 

Selection criteria: Applicants will be selected on a ‘first comefirst served’ basis in conjunction with a quality assessment of their application. For that reason, applicants will be selected on a rolling basis and will be informed of the status of their application within max. 15 days after the submission. Once all places are booked, we will announce the closure of the application procedure. We warmly welcome applications from young (trainee) lawyers, LLM and (post) doctoral students, while also keeping a certain number of places for motivated undergraduate students.

Affiliation with the Capri School of European Procedural Law: Our Summer School is proudly collaborating with the School organised in Capri and Naples by the Capri School of European Procedural Law.

Working in synergy, and with the aim of providing complementary knowledge of EU law, the two summer schools are coordinating their subjects, Capri School being dedicated on procedural aspects of EU law, while Corfu Summer School on its substantial aspects, and are offering a preferential rate for those attending both schools.

The Capri School will be held on 25-28 May in Capri and Naples. The participation fee, without accommodation, is 300 Euros and it is reduced to 180 Euros for those also attending – or having attended – the Corfu Summer School. More information can be found here.
