Summer School 2022

The 4th Summer School of the European Law Masters Alumni Association of the Law School of Athens (ELMAA) will take place in Corfu island from 25 to 29 July 2022.

 

WHAT IS IT

The Summer School is yearly organised in Corfu Island by ELMAA, in collaboration with the Ionian University of Corfu and the Corfu Bar Association. It covers a broad sphere of fields on EU law, this year being legal remedies before the EU courts, energy law, media regulation, tax law and translation & interpretation in the EU institutions. The Summer School’s main objective is to bring participants closer to EU law as well as to experts and colleagues of the field.

Courses are held in English every morning from 10:00 to 13:30 at the premises of the Ionian University.

Participants get to meet colleagues from different countries during the courses and the Summer School's activites.

Accommodation
Accommodation

For those who chose to pay the participation fee that covers accommodation from Sunday 24 July to Friday 29 July, they will stay at the beautiful "Sunset Hotel Corfu". Its five 5 minute driving distance from the city will be covered by private bus hired by the Summer School.

Exploring the island
Exploring the island

In afternoons, participants have free time to discover themselves the beauties of Corfu island. One beach day will be organised by the Summer School's organising team.

A tour by a professional guide at the historical sites of the city and a presentation of the European history of the island is offered to the participants.

A little event will take place on the afternoon of 25 July, where the Greek Vice-Minister of Justice, Georgios Kotsiras, will give the keynote speech.

Participants have the chance to meet in person and discuss with judges at the European Court of Justice, civil servants of the EU institutions and professors at European universities.

In between classes, participants take a 30 minutes coffee break to rest, discuss and enjoy a beverage and snacks.

Anthony Michael Collins, Advocate General at the European Court of Justice. Course on challenging the validity of EU measures in practice.

Vasilios Christianos, Emeritus professor of EU law of Law School of Athens. Course on preliminary references by national courts before the European Court of Justice [teaching together with Georgia Kelepouri and Alexandros Politis].

Stefanos Kardaras, Legal & strategy advisor to the Director General of Euratom, European Commission. Course on today’s role of the Euratom Treaty.

Michel Politis, Professor of legal, political and economic translation at the Ionian University of Corfu. Course on the translation of documents of the EU institutions.

Georgia Kelepouri, lawyer, PhD candidate at the Law School of Athens. Course on preliminary references by national courts before the European Court of Justice [teaching together with Prof. Vasilios Christianos and Alexandros Politis].

Roberto Mastroianni, Judge at the General Court of the European Union and EU law professor at the University of Naples. Course on freedom of information and free movement of audiovisual services in EU law.

Aikaterini Pantazatou, Professor of Tax Law at the University of Luxembourg. Course on European Tax Law.

Thedoros Panagos, lawyer, professor at the International Hellenic University, former Vice-Chairman of the Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy. Course on “RepowerEU – Towards an Energy Independent Europe – Emergency Measures”.

Spiridon Adamopoulos, interpreter at the European Court of Justice. Course on practical issues regarding the legal interpretation at the ECJ.

Alexandros Politis, lawyer, PhD candidate at University of Luxembourg. Course on preliminary references by national courts before the European Court of Justice [teaching together with Prof. Vasilios Christianos and Georgia Kelepouri].

All practical information

you need to know

Who can apply

Young lawyers, postgraduate law students and (trainee) lawyers who wish to advance their knowledge in the field of European Union Law. Undergraduate law students and individuals with a specialization in other scientific fields are also welcome, as long as they provide adequate evidence that they can actively involve and benefit from attending the courses.

As courses will be held in English, working level knowledge of English is essential.

Please note that the number of places available is limited to 40. Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis. Thus, early applications are highly encouraged since a first come, first served criterion will apply in conjunction with a quality assessment.

 

Application and registration fee

Interested applicants should fill in the application form until 10 June 2022. You can find the application form here.

Selected applicants will be informed via e-mail within 1-2 weeks after their application. They will also receive an invitation to transfer the registration fee to ELMAA’ s bank account. Please note that participation will not be ensured until the fee is paid.

There are two options regarding the registration fee:

Option 1: 250 Euros/person OR  220 Euros/person for ELMAA’s members in good standing. The fee covers the lectures, a 5-night accommodation in Sunset Hotel Corfu (in double rooms), breakfast at the hotel, transportation from the hotel to the Summer School’s premises, coffee breaks and a tour at the city by a professional guide.

Option 2: 100 Euros/person OR 60 Euros/person for ELMAA’s members in good standing. The fee covers the lectures, coffee breaks and a tour by a professional guide. Thus, no accomodation, breakfast and transportation are included.
